Adelaide Office

Our Adelaide office acts to support the efficient functioning of the entire Central Operations activities by providing managerial, administrative and logistical support.

It is also the centre for all fundraising and public relations activities which are critical to the on-going operation of the RFDS. The primary function of these activities is to raise funds for the purchase and medical fit-out of new aircraft which are essential to the safety and efficiency of our service.

The Adelaide office is responsible for a relatively small proportion of our total labour employed. Even a significant number of our the office team are either trained medical professionals or qualified pilots.

Adelaide Hangar

The RFDS has operated aircraft out of Adelaide since 1988.  The tasks performed by crews from the Adelaide Hangar differ somewhat from traditional RFDS activities.  A large portion of their work involves the transfer of patients from country to city hospitals for specialist treatment or a higher level of care.  This service is often referred to as air ambulance by the media.

In addition they are also often called upon to undertake emergency retrieval flights.  Retrieval flights are staffed by a combination of RFDS and external retrieval teams based at the larger Adelaide hospitals; Royal Adelaide, Women’s & Children’s, Queen Elizabeth and Flinders Medical Centre.  The external retrieval teams comprise of a retrieval doctor with the pertinent areas of expertise and a registered nurse with appropriate qualifications in adult, paediatric or neonatal intensive care.

In the retrieval situation, the RFDS flight nurse assists with the stabilisation and transport of the critically ill patient and ensures that implications of altitude physiology and considered during stabilisation and transport.  The flight nurse is also responsible for cabin safety as it applies to members of the team and the patient.

While the Adelaide Hangar crews may travel anywhere in the state and to interstate centres, the principal areas covered are the rural areas of South Australia.
