Alice
Springs Operations
at Alice Springs encompass a full aero-medical service, a preventative
health services program, a communications base and a museum &
tourist facility that attracts more than 100,000 national and
international visitors each year. Opened
in 1939, the Base operates from a hangar at the Alice Springs Airport
and an associated communications, administration and tourist centre in
Alice Springs CBD, primarily servicing the southern half of the Northern
Territory and the northern regions of South Australia. Its
operations differ from other RFDS bases in that the Remote Health
Section of the Northern Territory Department of Health and Community
Services receive all calls for medical assistance, direct the use of
aircraft and arrange all clinics.
The RFDS employs a doctor who works within this section and
supplies the aviation and nursing component of the operation.
