The
Royal Flying Doctor Service Visitor Centre at Alice Springs commenced operations in the late
1970’s and since then has grown to become one of the most popular
attractions in Central Australia. The wide appeal of the RFDS Visitor Centre at Alice Springs was recently recognised when it won the 2005 Brolga Award for Tourism Excellence in the Significant Tourist Attractions category. Winning this award is a reflection of the commitment of the entire team that operates this engaging and educational facility which incorporates a museum, souvenir shop, one of the oldest functioning RFDS communication bases to be found and our cafe which serves up some delicious treats in very relaxed, informal surroundings. The
television series based on the RFDS has made the centre a ‘must
see’ attraction on all travellers’ itineraries. On
average 80,000 people visit the centre each year. The centre includes a
Cafe offering a wide variety of delicious food and beverages. Let
us take you on a tour of the Base… The
tour has been designed around five elements:
The
tour begins… A member of our friendly and knowledgeable team welcomes you to the base and will guide you through our Auditorium and Communications room. Tours
commence on the hour and half-hour and take approximately 45 minutes. DVD An
inspiring 10 minute DVD is shown of RFDS staff talking about their
work along with people who have been helped by the RFDS.
There is some excellent footage of the vast Australian Outback
areas we cover along with a good insight into the vital work of the
Flying Doctor. A
German speaking video is also available for group bookings.
This must be booked in advance and is then screened at ¼ to or
¼ past the hour. In this
instance, your tour guide is asked to give the talk and our staff are
available to answer questions at the Radio Communications Centre. Radio
Communications Centre After the video, you are guided into the Radio Communication viewing area where our staff talk about the history of the Flying Doctor and explain the present day to day operations. Museum You
then move into our Museum where you can browse at your leisure viewing
old medical equipment, an original Traeger Pedal Radio, model aircraft
and more. Café Souvenir
